Coburg (Victoria)

Coburg is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. The district is part of the administrative area ( LGA) City of Moreland and is the seat of the city administration.

Geographical Location

The district Coburg is located about eight kilometers north of the " Central Business District ". The boundaries of the district in the west by the Melville Road, Devon Avenue, Sussex Street and West Street, on the east by Elizabeth Street and Merri Creek, on the south by the Moreland Road and to the north by the Gaffney Street and Murray Road.

History

Before the arrival of Europeans lived in the area around present-day Coburg the Wurundjeri, an aboriginal tribe. Coburg was explored 1837-1838 for the first time by Robert Hoddle.

1850 the prison " HM Prison Pentridge " was built. The prison was known as the " Bluestone College ", where prisoners stones broke through the "Blue Stone" mines for road construction. In 1997 the prison was closed and partially demolished to release surface for housing. Only the prison remained.
