Colares is a Portuguese town and parish in the municipality of Sintra.

History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. Later, here was a town in the Roman province of Lusitania. From this period are, inter alia, Coins and inscriptions have been preserved. After the Moors from 711 occupied this area also conquered Portugal's first king D.Afonso Henriques during his conquest of Sintra Colares 1147 also, which then received its first city charter. 1255 confirmed D.Afonso King III. municipal rights and made Colares to the seat of its own circle.

The area belonged to the Portuguese crown until King D.João it I. Culture and sights

The cape Cabo da Roca and the beaches of the municipality are the most famous attractions. The historic tram Sintra goes to Praia das Macas, the most famous beach of Colares.

Among the numerous monuments of the community includes a number of mansions, religious buildings, fountains, and historic private and public buildings. In addition, the community is part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, which is conducted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.

In building the volunteer fire brigade ( Bombeiros Voluntários de Almoçageme ) is the Museu Renato Lobo Garcia that housed the history of the Fire Department is dedicated.
