Colin Marshall, Baron Marshall of Knightsbridge

Colin Marsh Marshall, Baron Marshall of Knightsbridge (* November 16, 1933; † 5 July 2012) was a British top managers and a deputy in the House of Lords.

Marshall attended the University College School, a private school for boys in Hampstead, a northern suburb of London. At 16, he left school without an advanced degree and also attended later no secondary schools.

In 1951, he began his career with the shipping line Orient Steam Navigation Company. After that, he spent 23 years in various companies in the car hire, beginning with Hertz and Avis thereafter. He worked in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the UK, and rose in 1971 to executive vice president of Avis, 1976, he became president and CEO. Following the acquisition of Avis in 1979, he was Executive Vice President of Norton Simon Inc. and co-chairman of Avis.

In 1983 he was recruited by John Leonard King and became CEO of British Airways. Focus of his work was the preparation of the privatization of the airline 1987. 1993 he was in addition to his role as CEO and Chairman of the Company, before Bob Ayling in 1996 took over the role as CEO.

In July 2004, he resigned as chairman of BA and Martin Broughton became his successor.

May 1996 to July 1998 was Marshall President of the Confederation of British Industry and directed the CBI International Advisory Board. He was Chairman of the Board of Birkbeck, University of London, vice - president of the Advertising Association, Member of the British American Business Council International Advisory Board, Council Member of the Institute of Directors and president of the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council.

Between June 1998 and July 2003, Marshall was also Chairman of Invensys plc and 1995 to 2000 of Inchcape plc. He was from September 1999 to July 2003 chairman of The Royal Institute of International Affairs ( Chatham House), from October 2000 to October 2003 Chairman of The Board of Trustees of The Conference Board Inc., January 1993-May 2004 Member of the Board of HSBC Holdings plc and from 2007 to 2010 Chairman of the Queen's Club.

Other supervisory board mandates were those of a Chairman of Pirelli UK plc (from September 2003) and Nomura International plc ( from 1 October 2004 ). Between 1 January 2005 and 1 January 2007, he was also Chairman of the British National Tourist Board, Visit Britain.

Honors

In 1991, the Tony Jannus Marshall Award for his achievements in the field of civil aviation. He was raised in June 1998 as Baron Marshall of Knightsbridge of Knightsbridge in the City of Westminster as a life peer in the peerage. This was accompanied by a seat in the House of Lords, where he was assigned to any of the parties (Cross Bencher ).

He became an honorary doctorate from the University of Bath in 1989.
