Comillas

Comillas is a municipality in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria in northern Spain, it is located about 40 km west of Santander. In addition to the main town still includes the villages of La Rabia, Rioturbio, Rubárcena, Ruiseñada and Trasvía to the community.

History

Traditionally, the place is known as "the city of archbishops ." Also, have long been fishing and agriculture is important. Recently, however, was the primary sector of the tertiary sector, ie displaced by tourism and service industries. King Alfonso XII. and many other nobles from Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Bilbao spent part of their time preferably in places such as Comillas.

The community was the first settlement in Spain with electrically powered street lighting. That body was driven by the family of Márques de Comillas, in particular from 2 Márques Claudio López Bru.

Catholic priest Antonio de Hornedo Correa, who spent much of his life in Peru, was born in 1915 in Comillas.

Attractions

Comillas is mainly due to the patronage of Claudio López Bru, rich in architecture of the late historicism and early Modernism.

Some of the most outstanding examples:

  • Palacio de Sobrellano (built 1878-1890 by Joan Martorell for the Márques de Comillas )
  • Panteon de Sobranello (chapel next to the Palacio de Sobranello, built in 1881 also by Martorell, the device comes from young Antoni Gaudí )
  • Building of the Comillas Pontifical University (Spanish: Universidad Pontificia Comillas ), 1883 started by Martorell, by Lluís Domènech i Montaner completed; The university was founded by Claudio López Bru in Comillas, the main campus is now in Madrid.
  • Villa Quijano, also known as " El Capricho " (built 1883-1885 by Antoni Gaudí as a summer country house for a wealthy businessman. Striking is the design of the building with a variety of sunflower patterns and the minaret -like entrance tower )
  • The cemetery ( built by Lluís Domènech i Montaner in the ruins of a church )

In the field of Municipalities is also the entrance to the cave La Meaza. It is in the possession of the Government of Cantabria. 1907, the cave was extensively explored. It contains traces of Palaeolithic burial rites and other references to the colonization of the area by cultures of the European Spätpaläolithikums as Azilian and Solutrean.
