Potes

Potes is a municipality in the autonomous region of Cantabria in Spain. It has 1452 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and is the main town of the district Liébana. The nearby towns are Cabezon de Liebana, Camaleno, Cillorigo de Liebana, Pesaguero, Treviso and Vega de Liebana.

Geography

Potes is located on nearly 300 meters above sea level at the intersection of four valleys, and at the mouth of the river Quiviesa into the river Deva, whose source is located in the Picos de Europa. Like the rest of the district Liébana, Potes has a Mediterranean microclimate, which also allows for the cultivation of wine and other non-typical for the situation in the mountains plants.

Economy and infrastructure

The main source of income of the village is tourism due to its location in the National Park Picos de Europa.

Potes is located on the national road N -621, which connects León over the San Glorio pass with the Cantabrian coast, and the CA -184 that crosses the Piedrasluengas pass in the province of Palencia. The nearest major town is 100 km from Santander.

Gastronomy

The most famous dish from Potes is the chickpea stew cocido lebaniego. Other products from Potes, various cheeses, honey and grape brandy Pomace, which is distilled from the wine grown in the valley.
