Constance of Arles

Constance of Provence (also: Constance of Arles; * 986, † July 25, 1034 in Melun or Senlis ) was 1003-1031 Queen of France.

Daughter of Count William I of Provence and Adelaide of Anjou. As the third wife of King Robert the Pious of France, she succeeded at last, to him by the birth of a son, Hugo, to secure the succession. Konstanze once, then described as a beautiful, intelligent and lively as ambitious, greedy and ratty. She has but people in Paris certainly shocked with the southern French fashion, which was much more liberal than those in the north of France.

In the year 1007/1008 Hugo von Beauvais was a confidant of the king, in a hunting expedition of 12 soldiers of Constance relatives Fulk III. Nerra, Count of Anjou, were led murdered. The extent to which the queen herself was involved in the incident is unclear. Hugh of Beauvais should have sown discord but between her and her husband. Since 1025/1026 the Queen was involved unusually intense in the government of her husband. The reason for this was certainly among others, the age of the king at the time, who was at least 14 years older than his wife, who was able to win over her aging husband at own weight in the royal exercise of power.

Konstanze one owes the introduction of a " Grammar national" in France and the sense of the rhyme.

1033, she entered the convent Melun or Senlis, where she died on 25 July 1034. She was buried in the Basilica of St- Denis.
