Count Ludwig Joseph von Boos-Waldeck

Ludwig Joseph von Boos of Waldeck and Montfort, also called short- Boos - Waldeck (* November 26, 1798 in Koblenz, Rhineland, † October 1, 1880 in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria ) was the Duke of Nassau lieutenant colonel and stable manager and co-founder of the " Mainzer Adel Association ".

Family

He came from the old Rhenish nobility Boos zu Waldeck, originally on the Ganerben Castle Waldeck in Baybachtal (Hunsrück ) resident, and was the son of the Elector of Trier chamberlain Clemens Graf von Boos zu Waldeck ( 1773-1842 ) and Johanna Baroness von Bibra (1774 -1856 ) and a cousin of Queen Victoria.

Boos - Waldeck married about 1827 Henriette Baroness von Wessenberg Ampringen ( 1807-1856 ), the daughter of Johann Freiherr von Wessenberg Ampringen ( 1773-1858 ).

He was the uncle of composer and patron Victor Graf von Boos of Waldeck and Montfort ( 1840-1916 ).

Life

Boos - Waldeck began his military career as an officer in the First Carlist War in the Army Carlos María Isidro de Borbón. He subsequently joined the Prussian army and was lieutenant in the 5th Lancers. But in 1832 he became a Major la suite and aide to the later (1839 ) Duke Adolf of Nassau. On March 17, 1837 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the army Herzoglich Nassau. On 20 April 1844, he was appointed master of the horse.

1831-1832 he worked as a representative of the Prince of Wied member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Duchy of Nassau.

In April 1842 he founded, together with other 20 nobles in Biebrich the " Mainzer Adelsverein " to promote the German emigration to Texas ( USA) and support. On 19 May the same year he was officially appointed in Mainz for the proxy and received an order to go along with Viktor Graf zu Leiningen- Westerburg - Altleiningen to Texas and there to buy on behalf of the noble country club.

Soon after their arrival in late August 1842 in Galveston (Texas ) both studied briefly with Texas President Sam Houston in his city of Houston, and marked him their plans and objectives of the noble association. In October, both traveled to Columbia, San Felipe de Austin, the German settlement " Rödersmühl " (now Shelby ) to Mill Creek in Austin County and finally came in November in Washington-on -the- Brazos, where at that time the Congress of the Republic of Texas met.

In the former capital, they met again with President Houston, to negotiate a purchase of land for the settlement of German settlers. Houston's concrete offer they refused, however, when they learned that it was a border area and also the settlement area of hostile Indians west of Austin (Texas ). Instead Boos - Waldeck bought for 70,000 florins 1,780 acres of land in Fayette County near the settlement Industry (Texas), where already the immigrant Friedrich Ernst with family (see: Caroline Ernst) and other Germans had settled. Boos - Waldeck named the land " Nassau- Farm" in honor of his friend, employer and at the same time chairman of the " Mainzer Adelsverein ". Later the settlement was named after its founder Waldeck (Texas ). Leiningen left Texas in January 1843 Germany, while Boos - Waldeck remained a whole year to further develop and prepare the country for future settlers. From slaves he built huts, a bigger house for the overseer, let cultivate the land and grow corn, cotton, sugar beet, potatoes and tobacco. He also had a larger, two-story log cabin built as the future seat of the noble association. Two years later, in May 1845 reported the German geologist Ferdinand von Roemer, this log cabin is one of the best built and most comfortable, that he had ever seen in Texas, the land was fenced and cultivated and the farm deal 19 slaves, a slave family as House staff serving.

In contrast to the report Boos - Waldeck Leiningens recommended in his now following reports to the Adelsverein to first create the necessary conditions and only then make the settlement gradually, but was ignored his recommendation and a true "Texas Boom" began. The dangers of such a thoughtless and unprepared population in mind, stepped Boos - Waldeck and his brother Anton in April 1844 from the "Mainz Adelsverein " from.

In 1843, he was named the Duke, while Boos - Waldeck was again in Texas, to his stable master and adjutant. In this position he remained until he retired in 1846 at his own request from military service. His successor was Carl Graf zu Castell- Castell. In 1850 the Duke Count Boos an annual pension of 4,000 florins in recognition of his special services granted. His retirement Boos - Waldeck spent in the Bavarian Pielenhofen at Regensburg, but stood up to his death in constant correspondence with his friend and former employer.
