Count of Trastámara

The title Earl of Trastamara is a title of nobility from the Galician part of the Kingdom of León. For earldom was the Tierra de Trastmára, an area in the northwestern Galicia within the present province of A Coruña. The region is bounded on the southeast by the River Tambre, of the field also gave the name: Trastámara = Trans Tameris, beyond the Tambre. Trastamaras center is the church of Santa Comba.

The first Named Earl of Trastámara was Pedro de Fróilaz Traba (or Trava, 1086/1126 attested ), who was the most powerful secular noblemen in the kingdom of Galicia. However, it should be borne in mind that the document of the monastery Caaveiro of 1125, in which the title of count is called, is suspected to be fake. His son Fernando Pérez de Traba ( 1090 - 1155 ) was the lover of Teresa of León (Dona Teresa de Leão, 1080-1130 ), the illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso VI. of León - Castile and wife of Henry of Burgundy, the County of Portugal received as a dowry, and there eventually even regent (1112 ) and Queen. The daughter of Theresa and Fernando, Teresa Fernández de Traba († 1180), was the second wife of King Ferdinand II of León ( † 1188 ).

The most significant of Mr. Trastámara however, was Enrique el de las Mercedes (1333-1379), the illegitimate son of King Alfonso XI. of Castile and León and Leonor de Guzman. He was given the title of Count of Trastámara, Lemos and Sarria, and under the name Trastámara he succeeded in 1369 as Henry II, the accession to the throne of Castile and León. The donated by him Trastámara house, however, has not much to do with the county, as the branch line, the Trastámara was given extinct mid-15th century. The title was awarded in the year of death of the last Countess ( 1455 ) to a relative of her husband on. Since then, he is passed on in the family Osorio or their descendants.
