Coupar Angus Abbey

The monastery Coupar Angus (English: Coupar Angus Abbey ) is a former Cistercian monastery in Scotland. It is located at Coupar Angus in central Scotland, on the border between the territories of Angus and Gowrie (District Perth and Kinross ).

History

The monastery was founded by the Scottish king Malcolm IV on the old royal house of Coupar in 1162.

Coupar Angus Abbey was a daughter foundation of Melrose Abbey, a daughter house of Clairvaux Abbey Primary.

After the Scottish Reformation, the monastery was abolished in 1559 and converted into a noble estate of James Elphinstone 1606.

Buildings and plant

From the monastery only a few remains are preserved, so parts of the gatehouse and stone fragments in the parish church.
