Cugnaux

Cugnaux is a commune in the Haute- Garonne in the Région Midi -Pyrénées. With 16,049 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Cugnaux is the sixth largest municipality in the department of Haute- Garonne.

Geography

Cugnaux than twelve kilometers south-west of Toulouse. The town is located on the second terrace of the Garonne, about six kilometers west of the river. Neighboring municipalities are Tournefeuille in the north, Toulouse ( district of Saint -Simon ) in the Northeast, Portet -sur -Garonne in the east, Villeneuve- Tolosane in the south and Plaisance- du-Touch in the west and northwest. The creek Roussimort separates the municipality of Portet -sur -Garonne, the Ousseau, which flows into the touch, forms the border with Plaisance- du-Touch. The western part of the city is crossed by the Canal de Saint- Martory. Cugnaux is a member of the Association of Municipalities Grand Toulouse, among the total of 25 municipalities.

Etymology

In Occitan Cugnaux Cunhaus means. The name derives from the word cunha what wedge means. This testifies to the richness of the forest area and the intensive deforestation in the Middle Ages. This was a prerequisite for the creation of new building land.

Sports

Cugnaux was the starting point of the twelfth stage of the 2011 Tour de France to Luz Ardiden.
