Cugney

Cugney is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Cugney situated at an altitude of 240 m above sea level, 9 km NNW of Marnay and about 27 km northwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village extends to the south of the department, on the plateau to the west of the Monts de Gy expands, at the source of Ténise.

The area of ​​11.39 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the gently undulating countryside between the valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north. The main part of the area is occupied by a platform, which is an average 250 m. It is composed of an alternation of sandy- marly and calcareous beds of the upper Jurassic and the Tertiary. For drainage northwest to the Saône Ténise provides. The plateau is used predominantly agricultural, but there are also some forest areas. To the north, the municipality's area extends into the Bois de Grilley. In the south, the land rises slightly and culminates in the heights of the Bois de Cugney. Here the highest elevation of Cugney is achieved with 315 m.

Neighboring communities of Cugney are Onay and Velloreille -lès- Choye in the north, and Choye Charcenne in the east, Avrigney - Virey, Tromarey and Bonboillon in the south and Venère in the West.

History

Remains of a villa from the Gallo- Roman period indicate a very early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages Cugney belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. Since the 12th century the parish Cugney is occupied. In 1257, the Kastlanei Cugney is mentioned. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France.

Attractions

The church of Saint - Valere was built in the 18th century in classical style. For the rich interior furnishings are from the 17th and 18th century, a statue of the Virgin de Pitié (15th century), a richly carved wooden altar (18th century) and a grave slab of marble. From the medieval castle only a few remains are visible. The present castle houses a museum (vehicles, phonographs and radios from the period 1860-1950 ).

Population

With 187 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Cugney one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 321 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the early 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Cugney was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards, vineyards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village has good transport links. It is located near the main road D12, which runs from Pesmes by Gy. Further road links exist with Venère, Choye, Onay and Velloreille -lès- Choye.
