Hughes counted as youth players Everton to any of the most promising talents and in the 1983/84 season he won the FA Youth Cup the National Selection. The young left-back had there already played in the first team and John Bailey represented in the 0-3 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 27 December 1983. In an increasingly high-profile team, he found it difficult, however, from now on, to find his place and neither the FA Cup victory in 1984 when winning the English Championship in 1985 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in the same year he played no significant role. Only in the last two minor league games against Coventry City (1:4) and Luton Town (0-2 ), it came as part of a " B-team " for the course. In the absence of a sporting perspective Everton let him free transfer in June 1985 to the second division Shrewsbury Town draw.

He played himself in the hearts of the followers and more bitter was for this change to be the end of September 1986, 35,000 pounds to league rivals Brighton & Hove Albion. In Brighton Hughes acted often clearly offensive in left midfield or even the penalty area, but with 26 league operations even he could not prevent the " seagulls " after the 1986/87 season descended as Table in the third league.

In the third English top Hughes acted but after he joined in September 1987 for Port Vale. He was also again be "set" on his left side defense, and in the years that followed, he became the " evergreen". Within two years he was with 87 league inserts part of a team that ansetzte from the middle of the third division to the rise and this also brought about by play-off success against Preston North End and Bristol Rovers. Back in the Second Division, he helped the team as a regular player for safe relegation, but suffered a first setback when two operations were needed after a hernia and he thus missed a lot of the games in the 1990/91 season. Further Turmoil followed in the season 1991/92, as though Hughes with 42 stakes returned to his former position, but the " Valiants " descended as Table to the third tier at the same time. Far more serious, however, was a severe hamstring injury that put Hughes for more than two years completely out of action. This led even to the extent that the club freely placed him in February 1994, after which Hughes successfully appealed to the Labour Court in an ongoing process to August 1994 to reinstatement. Nevertheless, he then left the club in November 1994.

The fourth division Northampton Town gave him a fresh start in January 1995 with a contract and generously applied on a monthly basis, he graduated from the end of the 1994/95 season for the " Cobblers ' 13 competitive games.
