Dave Carpenter

Dave Carpenter (* November 4, 1959 in Dayton (Ohio ), † June 23, 2008 in Burbank (Los Angeles County) ) was an American jazz bassist.

Life and work

Carpenter studied music at Ohio State University and began his musical career with Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman. He also played in the Peter Erskine Trio and in the big bands of Bill Holman, also with Alan Pasqua, Bill Perkins, Jack Nimitz, Herb Geller, Herbie Hancock, Jack Sheldon, Al Jarreau, Bill Cunliffe Jan Lundgren, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco and Richard Stoltzman. Carpenter was in demand as a session musician in the clubs and studios of Los Angeles; he participated in over two hundred photographs and numerous television and film soundtracks, such as Tom Hanks ' That Thing You Do! (1996 ), Ocean's Eleven (2001 ) Sideways (2004 ) 50 First Dates (2004), Wild Things 2 (2004), Charlie Bartlett (2007) and When Do We Eat? (2008), also in the original recording of the Broadway musical Cabaret. Carpenter was a founding member of the Lounge Art Ensemble ( with Bob Sheppard and Peter Erskine ). The experienced with Erskine and Pasqua Album standards was nominated a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual Artist or Group in 2009. He died after a recording session with Simon Phillips and Peter Erskine of a heart attack.

Carpenter is not to be confused with the rock bassist David J. Carpenter.
