David Calderhead

David Calderhead ( born June 19, 1864 in Hurlford, East Ayrshire, † January 9, 1938 in London) was a Scottish football player and coach.

Calderhead was a defender and was active for several clubs, including include Queen of the South and Notts County the best known. With the latter he succeeded in 1894, the victory in the FA Cup as Bolton Wanderers were defeated 4-1. In March 1889 he came to his only international match when he took up with the Scottish national team as part of the British Home Championship against Ireland. In Ibrox Park managed a 7-0 success.

From 1900 Calderhead worked as a coach at Lincoln City. When he favorites Chelsea in the FA Cup defeated in the 1906/ 07 season, they were so convinced on the opposite side of his work that you can still signed him in the same season.

Calderhead was the first full-time coach of the club and with 26 years of service at Stamford Bridge, he is a leader in Chelsea. Although he rose with the club from twice to rise again succeeded in both cases immediately. 1915 reached the club under his direction the first time the FA Cup final, but managed Sheffield United a 0-3 at Old Trafford. Two more times, the club was also in the semi-finals of the cup competition.

Because of his timid, restrained appearance to the media Calderhead was nicknamed " The Sphinx of Stamford Bridge". Therefore, he managed mainly by its transfer headlines as high for that time transfer fees known players ( among them many Scottish compatriots ) were lured to Chelsea. However, even never achieved his great success with players like Hughie Gallacher, Alex Jackson and Alec Cheyne.

In June 1933, Calderhead retired and left the dugout as his successor Leslie Knighton.
