David Phillips (footballer)
David Owen Phillips ( born July 29, 1963 in Wegberg, Germany ) is a former Welsh footballer. He celebrated his biggest success as a player of Coventry City winning the FA Cup 1986/87. Between 1984 and 1996 he played 62 international matches for the Welsh national team.
Playing career
Plymouth Argyle and Manchester City
David Phillips began his career in the English third division side Plymouth Argyle, before moving to Manchester City in 1984. With his new team reached Phillips ( 42 Ligaspiele/12 goals) 1984/85 promotion to the first division. In the Football League First Division 1985/86, the climber secured a table Fifteenth in the league.
Coventry City and Norwich City
In 1986, he signed a contract with Erstligakonkurrenten Coventry City and moved the following season with his team to the final of the FA Cup 1986/87. 98,000 spectators in Wembley Coventry Tottenham Hotspur defeated 3-2 after extra time. On 31 July 1989 it undertook Norwich City. After placement in the lower middle of the table to Norwich secured with Phillips ( 42 league games / 9 hits ) in the first season of the newly introduced Premier League 1992/93 to third place. At the end of the season, David Philip joined surprising at Nottingham Forest, who were relegated to the second division in the previous year for the first time since 1977 again.
Nottingham Forest and last stations
In the Football League First Division in 1993/94 to Forest secured as runner directly in a return to the premier league and ended the subsequent Premier League 1994/95 surprisingly in third place. Because of this placement, the club qualified for the UEFA Cup in 1995/96 and moved into the quarter-finals of the competition. After a 1:2 away defeat in the first leg, Forest lost the return match at home in the City Ground with 1:5 against eventual champions FC Bayern Munich and was eliminated from the competition. After he was staying with Nottingham in 1996/97 to the second division, he moved on 14 November 1997 on the second division Huddersfield Town. After two more stations in Lincoln City and FC Stevenage he finished his playing career in 2001.
Welsh national team
On 2 May 1984, Phillips made his debut in the Welsh national team in a 1-0 home victory over England. In qualifying for the European Championship in 1992 defeating Wales on 5 June 1991 the reigning world champions Germany 1-0 but missed out on participating in the final tournament. Until 1996, he played a total of 62 matches (two goals), but failed to qualify for Wales with no international tournament.
