Dennis González

Sidney Dennis González ( born August 15, 1954 in Abilene, Texas) is an American trumpeter of the post-bop, avant-garde jazz and free jazz as well as writer and music educator.

Life and work

González learned in his youth trumpet and came in 1977 to Dallas, Texas. He worked at radio stations and with his own bands, with whom he recorded during his career for smaller jazz labels such as Silkheart, Brut, Clean Feed, Koch Jazz and 8th Harmonic Breakdown. In the late 1970s, he also founded the Musicians Cooperative Dallas Association for Avant -Garde and Neo Impressionistic music, short daagnim and the eponymous record label.

González's main instrument is the trumpet; next he plays the drums, flute, synthesizer and baritone saxophone. González now published 28 albums under his own name, among others, with guest musicians such as John Purcell, Andrew Cyrille and Malachi Favors. In London with the English free-jazz musicians Elton Dean, Keith Tippett, Louis Moholo and Paul Rogers, he took in 1987 on the album Catechism. In 1993 he played with the band " The Nordic Wizard Band" with musicians like Bugge Wesseltoft Scandinavian, Nils Petter Molvaer and Sidsel Endresen an album Welcome to Us for the Polish Gowi label.

Stylistically and conceptually recalls González to Don Cherry and Tomasz Stanko. Richard Cook and Brian Morton noted in The Penguin Guide to Jazz on Gonzalez's greatest achievements to having saxophonist Charles Brackeen 1987 lured from his temporary retreat. González also made sure that bassist Henry Grimes returned back to the recording studio as he in November 2003, the album Nile River Suite recorded with him.
