Dennis Snower

Dennis J. Snower ( born October 14, 1950 in Vienna ) is an American economist, president of the Institute for World Economics in Kiel and professor of theoretical economics at the Christian-Albrechts -University of Kiel.

Life

Snower was born in Vienna in 1950 and grew up there until he was 17. He received a BA and MA from New College, Oxford University ( in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, 1971) and an MA and PhD from Princeton University (1975). He is an American citizen, is married and has two children.

He worked at the University of Maryland as an Assistant Professor (1975-1979), the Institute for Advanced Studies as an Assistant Professor (1979-1980) and at Birkbeck College, University of London ( 1980-1983 Lecturer, Reader ( 1983-1988 ) and Professor (1989-2004)).

Since October 2004, Snower is President of the Institute for World Economics ( Kiel Institute ), headquartered in Kiel and professor of theoretical economics at the Christian- Albrechts- University of Kiel. His research interests include employment policy and unemployment.

Research and consultancy

Snower has advised governments in the areas of labor market policy, education policy and welfare state reform, including Britain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Spain. He worked as a consultant for the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and was a visiting professor at numerous universities, eg Columbia, Dartmouth College, European University Institute (Florence), Harvard, Princeton and Stockholm.

Snower has published among others in the following economic journals: American Economic Review, Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Perspectives, European Economic Review, Journal of Labor Economics.

Assar Lindbeck Together with he developed the " insider -outsider theory " to explain the dynamics of unemployment in Europe and the theory of " frictional growth" to explain the relationship between inflation and unemployment. With colleagues, he designed various policy actions ( eg employment vouchers and social accounts) that have been applied in different countries.

Snower is a Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (London ), Institute for the Study of Labor ( Bonn), CESifo (Munich), Euro Area Business Cycle Network and SKOPE Centre at Oxford University. He is a member of the Central Advisory Board of Commerzbank and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for Advanced Studies ( Vienna). He is also a member of the Global Agenda Council on Economic Imbalances and the Council on the Skills Gap (both World Economic Forum).

Snower initiated in 2008 in Schleswig-Holstein African Plön first time the Global Economic Symposium (GES). In 2010, the third GES was held in Istanbul, the fourth followed in 2011 in Kiel.

In 2011 he was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg.

To solve the euro crisis Snower outlined in May 2012, a " four-point plan for Europe", which proposes, among other things, a "breathing fiscal rule" and solvency criteria for EU countries.
