Detroit (1920s NFL teams)

Until the formation of the Detroit Lions played in Detroit, Michigan three teams professional American football. The Detroit Heralds / Tigers, Detroit Panthers, and the Detroit Wolverines. All three teams played only briefly in the National Football League ( NFL).

Team History of the Detroit Heralds / Tigers

The Heralds were founded in 1905 by former students of the University of Detroit. You were first an amateur team and played on the university campus. The team was initially to any league. From 1911 the team entered as a semi- professional team in appearance. The players came first from the region around Detroit, they were gradually replaced by players whose places of origin were not in Michigan. Their home games was from the team at Navin Field. 1918 presented the team due to the First World War the game operating at short notice. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association ( APFA ), the predecessor of the NFL was founded. Although the team officially was not a member of the APFA, it is today counted by sports historians to the league, as it took only against teams from the APFA. The success of the team was sobering, the team lost three of eight games, won two games and played three times in a draw. In 1921, the Heralds were renamed Tiger. This season was not successful. A victory against the Dayton Triangles were compared with five defeats and a draw. The Tigers introduced after this season a game operation.

Team History of the Detroit Panthers

In 1925, Jimmy Conzelman acquired for U.S. $ 500 a sports franchise of the NFL. Conzelman founded the Detroit Panthers. He also served as coach of the team and also played quarterback on offense his team. The Panthers wore their home games at Navin Field in Detroit.

The newly founded team surprised in the first game 1925. The team won eight of 12 games, played twice in a draw and lost two games. The NFL championship was finished in third place in the table. The following season, the Panthers could not connect to the previous year's success. After four wins, six defeats and two draws after they finished the game round the 12 place in the table. Since the Panthers no financial success had granted, Conzelmann gave his franchise after the season.

Team History of the Detroit Wolverines

1928 was launched by a group of investors to Benny Friedman, the Detroit Wolverines. The team was only a year and played in Dinan Field. Although the Wolverines in their single game year seven of 10 games won and finished the season in third place, stayed out of the economic success.
