Dieffenbachia

Dieffenbachia bowmannii

The dieffenbachia ( Dieffenbachia ) are a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae ( Araceae ). The about 51 neotropical Dieffenbachia species are distributed from Costa Rica to Colombia. Some varieties are all over the world to the popular indoor plants, on the one hand by their cute drawn leaves and, second, that they thrive in shady locations; in tropical countries as an ornamental in parks and gardens.

Description

Dieffenbachia species are evergreen, perennial herbaceous plants that are sometimes shrubby large. The upright to prostrate, often thick stems is often leafy at older specimens only at the top. The alternate and usually spirally arranged leaves are usually significantly in leaf sheath, petiole and leaf blade divided. Most large leaf blades are simple, ovate to lanceolate, often wrong - eyed; some varieties are variegated.

Dieffenbachia species are monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). Your typical Arum inflorescence not even covered by their individual bracts, called in Araceae spathe, especially on. The durable spathe is tubular and slightly constricted in the middle. The Spatharöhre is mostly extended strongly, remains up to fruit ripening obtained. When cylindrical piston ( spadix ) of the female portion is closely at the spathe and the female flowers are arranged relatively loose. The unisexual flowers have no perianth. The female flowers have a circle on four to five staminodes.

In the fruit stand Spatharöhre splits at maturity on to reveal the fruits. The scarlet or orange when ripe berries are close together on the piston.

The parts of the plant contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to humans as animals (eg, cats who like to chew on houseplants ).

System

The genus Dieffenbachia was set up by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott 1829 seguine with the type species Dieffenbachia ( Jacq. ) Schott in the Viennese magazine for art, literature, theater and fashion, 1929, 3, p 803. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott, director of the Botanical Gardens in Vienna from 1845 to 1865, with the generic name honors Dieffenbachia his longtime head gardener Joseph Dieffenbach ( 1796-1863 ). A synonym for Dieffenbachia Schott is Maguirea ADHawkes.

The genus Dieffenbachia belongs to the tribe Dieffenbachieae in the subfamily Aroideae within the family of Araceae.
