Diocese of Tampere

The Diocese of Tampere (Finnish Tampere hiippakunta ) is one of nine dioceses of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. Episcopal see is the cathedral of Tampere. To the Diocese of Tampere include 71 municipalities.

History

The Diocese of Tampere was founded in 1554 by the Swedish king Gustav I Vasa as a diocese Viipuri. It was after the diocese of Turku, the second diocese in Finland. After the Great Northern War, Sweden had to cede to Russia in 1721 in the Treaty of Nystad Viipuri, so two years later the bishop's seat to Porvoo ( swedish Porvoo ) was laid. 1923, the new Diocese of Porvoo was founded in Porvoo, the care of all Swedish-speaking believers in Finland. At the same time the old Diocese of Porvoo was converted to the Diocese of Tampere.
