History

The Archdiocese of Turku is the oldest diocese in Finland. After the Christianization of Finland, as the start date of the traditionally scheduled for the year 1155 crusade of the Swedish king Eric the Holy applies, a bishopric was first in Nousiainen and from 1229 in Koroinen. 1259 a " Bishop of Turku " ( episcopus Aboensis ) is mentioned for the first time. 1276 the chapter was founded in Turku. Initially comprised the Diocese of Turku, which was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Uppsala, almost the entire territory of present-day Finland. After the Reformation, the diocese of Turku remained, now as Evangelical Lutheran Diocese, unchanged. 1554 the eastern part of Finland was the newly established Diocese of Viipuri, the forerunner of today's diocese Tampere slammed.

1809 Finland became a Grand Duchy under Russian rule. Tsar Alexander I confirmed at the Diet of Porvoo, the position of the Lutheran Church, so that the Diocese of Turku continued to exist unchanged during the Russian period. For the 300 - year anniversary of the Reformation, the Bishop of Turku was raised in 1817 to the rank of archbishop. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the territory of the Diocese of Turku reduced by the establishment of other new bishoprics.
