The history of the airport begins Donetsk on 27 July 1931, when the regional government to build a civilian airfield, Donetsk, then still Stalino was decided. The opening took place in 1933. During World War II, the airport was used by the military. In the years after the war, the airport developed initially very slow, but it was the beginning of the world passenger boom in the seventies an increasingly important airport in Ukraine. The airport today plays an important role in Ukrainian civil aviation. The current terminal facilities have a capacity of 700 passengers per hour. The Donetsk airport is an international airport and has opened his new start and runway with 4000 m length in the summer of 2011. In addition to the already opened new path, the new terminal has already been completed to a large extent.

The airport is now one of the most popular airports in Ukraine. Currently, Aerosvit, Armavia, Austrian Airlines, Donbass Aero, Lufthansa, Pegasus Airlines, Transaero Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Ukraine International Airlines, Wizzair to Dortmund and UTAir fly to the airport. The line network covers destinations which are mainly in the Middle East, the CIS countries, Central Europe and in holiday regions.
