Doug Anthony

John Douglas " Doug " Anthony, CH ( born December 31, 1929 in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian politician.

Biography

Anthony began his political career when he was in 1957 elected a member of the House of Representatives, in which he held until 1983, the interests of the Country Party, now the National Party of Australia represented.

In 1964 he was appointed by Prime Minister Robert Menzies as interior minister for the first time in a government. This office he retained under Menzies successor Harold Holt 1966 until 1967. In the governments of Prime Minister John McEwen and John Gorton he was then Minister for Primary Industries. In March 1971 Prime Minister William McMahon appointed him as Minister of Trade and Industry. In its ruling government until December 1972, he was also Deputy Prime Minister ( Deputy Prime Minister ).

On 5 February 1971, he was elected to succeed John McEwen Chairman of the Country Party.

After the formation of a coalition government with the Liberal Party of Australia, he was appointed by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser on November 11, 1975 Deputy Prime Minister. He held until the end of Fraser's reign on March 11, 1983 this office and at this time was about 25 times acting Prime Minister of Australia for a few days to several weeks during the absence of the Prime Minister. In the Fraser government he was also from 1975 to 1977 Minister of Overseas Trade and National Resources, and after a cabinet reshuffle 1977-1983 Minister for Trade and Resources. 1981 Anthony was appointed a Companion of Honour (CH).

After his retirement from the House of Representatives in 1984, he joined back as chairman of the National Party and was succeeded in that office by Ian Sinclair.
