Background

Founded in 1971, Dr. Feelgood toured first through the pubs in England and built himself such a reputation on. After some time they were the most popular pub band in the UK in 1973 and signed a contract with the music label United Artists.

Apart from the live version of a medleys from the classics Bonie Moronie and tequila all the tracks for the album in September 1974 were included in a single run. At the request of the guitarist of the band, Wilko Johnson, after recording no additional audio tracks ( overdubs ) were used, and the album was released in mono. In addition to the vast number of original compositions from the pen Johnsons are also cover versions of John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom, Mickey Jupp's Cheque Book and a medley of rock ' n ' roll hit Bonie Moronie by Larry Williams and the surf - instrumental Tequila ( in the original by The Champs ) on the album. The song Oyeh! comes from Mick Green, the original guitarist of the band, who had already dropped out before.

Down by the Jetty was despite its limited commercial success, an important album because it had an impact on the mid -1970s, emerging punk and new wave music. It was also the start of the career studio producer Vic Maile, who would later produce the album Ace of Spades of the English hard rock band Motörhead among others.

In 2006 EMI released a " Collector's Edition" Down By The Jetty, whose two CDs featured alongside previously unreleased studio and live tracks, the thirteen songs on the original album from 1975 each in mono and in stereo. In addition, a total of eleven bonus tracks are on the album, including Bobby Troup's Route 66 and other cover versions of Solomon Burke, the songwriting duo Leiber / Stoller and Willie Dixon. In the liner notes by Will Birch also the influence of Dr. Feelgoods was mentioned on punk bands such as The Jam.
