Types of training

There are three types of drama schools:

  • State acting schools ( art schools / academies or vocational schools in public ownership )
  • Private law drama schools (as (higher ) vocational school or academy officially recognized or state- approved training centers in private ownership )
  • Private lessons

Training facilities in public ownership

These include primarily the state colleges and academies in the German language area that offer the course in Acting.

Of which there are twelve in Germany, in Austria and three in Switzerland two. There are also outside the university sector two other publicly funded training sites: the academy Otto Falkenberg School in Munich, which is supported by the City of Munich and the Technical High School Theatre Academy in West Pomerania Vorpommern Zinnowitz the State Theatre. In Austria, two conservatories in Vienna and Linz were also a few years ago to the existing universities raised to the rank of private universities. They are worn by the respective cities or from the province of Upper Austria. For this, the Carinthian State Conservatory is a government recognized post-secondary educational institution. Furthermore, the University of Timisoara in Romania to a German -language drama training.

The training needs of the public schools are, depending on the institution between 100 and 500 Euro per semester. A special feature of the Theatre Academy Vorpommern, which fall raises no training costs, but its students a training allowance paid ( as of summer 2006).

The candidates must undergo a mostly multiple receiving test to ensure a basic artistic ability at all public schools. Further characterized the candidate stream is channeled. Although there are no exact figures, but there are up to 5,000 applicants annually about 300 training places over.

The " Standing Conference of acting training " ( SKS ) is a working group of the German-speaking, state or municipal educational institutions for professional actors. It is used for coordination of the tasks that are transmitted these training centers, and promotes the discussion of content and organizational issues of acting training, unless they are of national importance.

State-approved or approved private law acting schools

They are usually called (higher ) " vocational school " ( even though many as " Academy " call ) or also recognized as " academy " and provide the bulk of the acting schools represents the state recognition and approval of a drama school is the conditions in the respective province bound.

For the drama students the state certification has the advantage of recognized training. This in turn is a prerequisite for recognition on state education funding ( federal financial aid ). The education at a private acting school costs up to 7,000 euros a year.

Qualitatively, the training is (whether private or state ) acting schools very different at all. Therefore, one should consider when choosing the school a few points: the number and qualifications of teachers per subject, whose professional qualification, contemporary teaching and the guaranteed number of teaching hours. This is to make sure is whether and to what extent, worked individually or in large groups. Rigorous training in the areas of breath, voice, speech and drama is possible both at a private and public school. However, the temporal training volume ( number of hours ) and the intensity of care ( Gruppen-/Einzelunterrichte ) at state schools is often much higher. When choosing the study course you should always make a personal impression on the spot seek contact with students, teachers and graduates.

In 2010, the first private drama schools have a particular association of German private acting schools ( VDPs eV) joined forces to lay down uniform training standards for the drama at private acting schools. Be taken only member schools to comply with the minimum standards commit. In addition, the association performs a so-called Seal examination for graduates before an independent commission of experts through. The association is made up successfully for more transparency and quality of private acting training.

Many state-funded theater hold back, to accept graduates of private drama schools. The study at a state drama school is given the difficult economic situation of many theaters and the mismatch of supply and demand still no guarantee of a successful career. On a good private acting school a sound education and a successful career is also possible with the same talent and at least the same personal commitment. Successful examples: Andrea Sawatzki, Til Schweiger, Katja Flint, Wotan Wilke Möhring, Hannah heart jump, Thomas Kretschmann, Kai Wiesinger, Anna Loos, Julia Bremer man, Irene Clarin, Veronica Ferres, Christine Neubauer, Heiner Lauterbach, Diane Kruger, Dominic Raacke, Bettina Zimmermann, Benno Fürmann, Daniel Brühl, Gesine Cukrowski

Private acting classes

Finally, there is the private acting lessons. This is discussed below in greater detail because it is in such a design in general correspond to classes in the performing arts that are offered by a single faculty. But that is not explicitly qualitative valuation be connected, because of course you can be an actor by private instruction or self-learning. A study in related disciplines may be helpful, such as the theater arts, literature or German, especially since there are at universities often academic amateur ensembles ( Student Theatre ).

Situation in individual countries

Germany

The drama at state and municipal institutions of higher education is considered to be " artistic study " and usually lasts 8 semesters. Successively through bachelor's and master's degrees ( "BA " / " MA " ) replaced: As in other courses of study, the previous graduate degree is at most universities ( the degree concrete " Dipl.- show. ").

The training period in private acting schools take three to four years and should end with a professional degree. The loaned to these drama schools outside of higher education " diploma " does not correspond to a university or college degree.

The stage examination, the one before the Joint Commission ( German Theatre Association and Cooperative German national stage - GDBA ) could take, was abolished in 1991.

A recruitment opportunity in theater engagements offers to the artists of the UWL (formerly Center Stage, TV and Film Agency ZBF), which, with six locations a part of the Federal Employment Agency. When evidence of relevant school-based vocational training ( at least 3 years at a state or state-recognized drama school ), interested parties who could not imagine the held annually called Intendantenvorsprechen the universities themselves, for an appointment for an audition in the drama department of performing artists can. From the course of this audition, in which the specialist intermediary make an assessment of employability in professional theater engagements, it depends on whether inclusion in the mediation register of artists' agency in the areas of stage and film can be / television. Crucial for the career advancement of actors in Germany is a high degree of initiative and commitment.
