DRG Class 43

The locomotives of Class 43 were freight unit steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

History

The Series 43 was the second series, which corresponded to the principle of standard design. According to the first typing plan of unification offices of the Deutsche Reichsbahn - 1'E freight locomotives were 20 to obtain t axle load. Here, a model with two-cylinder engine (BR 43) and a type with three-cylinder engine (BR 44) was provided, there was not yet known, was with what type of operation to perform economically. From two series of ten specimens were procured in parallel. The BR 43 was supplied by Henschel and Schwartzkopff.

In test runs it was determined that the BR was 43 to pursue economic benefits at less than 1500 PSI. By 1928, therefore, an additional 25 copies of the BR 43 were re-stocked. After that could be made for almost ten years with no new investments were to modernize the heavy freight service. Because of the increase in freight rates in the 30s, then the BR was given to 44 of the preference, as these economic advantages possessed in the upper speed range and could be admitted because of caused by the three-cylinder engine smoother running for 80 km / h. This was in addition to the fundamental advantage of the better mass distribution of a three-cylinder engine, especially on the fact that the engine of the BR 44 was designed easier, as per cylinder here had to be transferred lower forces, yes. BR 43 was not obtained as a result.

Record

In the literature one often finds statements that the locomotive had not been altogether satisfactory performance. It seems, however, that 43 013 tentatively with 5000 tons - more than double the towing load in the table given mass - has been charged and this coped without complaint. This is 43 013 German record holder, never before or since ever a single German locomotive were attached such tensile loads.

Whereabouts

The vehicles with numbers 43001-035 remained after the Second World War all at the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR. 1960, the remaining locomotives were again modernized, the powerful boiler also let the carriage of freight trains on the maximum trailer weight to. However, this led to frame damage, which could not mend the Reichsbahn. Thus followed the rapid phase-out of the machines, the last machine was made in 1968 Bw Cottbus out of service. (Also, coal-fired locomotives BR 44 were then placed already more widely dispensable and for the most part until 1970, even if you sometimes long afraid to officially be removed from the inventory. ) The vehicle with number 43 001 was used to Museumslok. It belongs to the existence of the Dresden Transport Museum, but is currently in the Railway Museum in Chemnitz - Hilbersdorf, an earlier use of the BR - Bw 43

The vehicles in this series were each equipped with a Tender of type 2'2 ' T 32. Single units were also ( even after the war ) coupled with the short Tender 2'2 T 30.
