Duane Michals

Duane Michals Stephen ( born February 18, 1932 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania) is an American photographer. Largely self-taught, his works are known for their innovation and artistry. Michals often works with photo sequences and the inclusion of text to express emotion and of life, which is reflected in a unique result.

Michals grew up in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, on. In 1953 he made the "Bachelor of Arts" at the University of Denver. After his military service he began in 1956 to study at the Parsons School of Design to become a graphic designer with the intention, but he did not complete the study. During a holiday in the Soviet Union in 1958, he discovered his interest in photography. From the photographs he made ​​during that trip, was his first exhibition in 1963 at the Metro Gallery in New York City.

For several years, Michals worked as a freelancer, including for Esquire and Mademoiselle. During the filming of The Great Gatsby in 1974, he photographed for Vogue. Since he had no photo studio, he made portraits of people in their surroundings, which in contrast to the operation of other photographers of the time, such as Richard Avedon and Irving Penn was.

In 1968 Michals was by the Mexican government commissioned the Summer Olympic Games to photograph 1968. In 1970 his works were shown for the first time City in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The portraits he made ​​1958-1988, formed the basis for his book " album".
