History

Start time

The railway line Ruhrort - Crefeld circle Gladbach should be a traffic route in order to bring the funded in the Ruhr coal to consumers in the lower Rhine can. The RCG therefore entered into an agreement with the Cologne -Minden Railway Company (CME ), which at this time only railway company, which was already active in the northern Ruhr area. This built an in Oberhausen emanating from their regular route stitch line to Ruhrort, the October 14, 1848 was completed.

The RCG began the construction of their route exactly on the opposite side of the Rhine, in Homberg in the lower Rhine, today located in the city of Duisburg. The connection to the railway station located on the right bank of the Rhine Ruhr place then presented from November 12, 1852 Ferry Ruhrort -Homberg ago, with the help of its passenger and freight cars could cross the stream.

On October 15, 1849, the route of Homberg about Trompet, Kaldenhausen, Uerdingen and Crefeld was opened to Viersen. On the day exactly two years later on October 15, 1851 was the completion of the final leg part after Gladbach (today Mönchengladbach ). There they had in 1853 following the railway lines to Aachen and Dusseldorf by the Aachen- Düsseldorf- Neuss - Railway Company (AND).

Even before they had completed their route, the RCG was conducted on April 1, 1850, together with the AND in state administration and the " Royal Directorate of Aachen- Dusseldorf - Ruhrorter Railway Company " assumes. This was then taken over by the ( also state-managed ) Bergisch- Märkischen Railway Company (BME ) on 1 January 1866.

The BME then built starting from its station in Mülheim- Styrum a branch line of their 1862 opened railway line Witten / Dortmund -Oberhausen / Duisburg Duisburg -Ruhrort, and led a continuous chainage one of the former Aachen RhE / Marschierthor station ( km 0,0) to Dortmund Hbf ( 164.3 kilometers ).

Partial closure

After the RhE had their original Trajektanstalt replaced by the Duisburg- high fields Railway Bridge, this ferry the Ruhr place -Homberg ran quickly from the rank. As a result, also lost the track section of Duisburg -Homberg after Hohenbudberg increasingly important.

The Trajektanstalt Ruhrort -Homberg was decommissioned on May 19, 1907, the railway line between Homberg and Trompet damaged during the Second World War and not put back into operation. Today, only traffic from Trompet is to the connection points of Sachtleben Chemie.

During the occupation of the Ruhr On March 17, 1923, severe railway accident in the district Friemersheim occurred when a locomotive collided with a military train. 40 people died, a large number was also injured. The course was run as Regiebetrieb French railwaymen field during the occupation of the Ruhr.

The created as part of the Lower Rhine Rhine -haul flight from Hausen to Trompet (and beyond via Moers to Kleve ) proved to be more economical, especially the south west rail yard Hohenbudberg could be approached directly by an additional track connection. Between Trompet and Uerdingen passenger services were eventually discontinued on 30th September 1961, the freight only followed one day later, on October 1, 1961 all track systems -. Unless used on the Lower Rhine route or the new mainline from Duisburg Hbf to Mönchengladbach - were completely dismantled and nowadays are practically invisible even on aerial photographs. The former station Kaldenhausen was shut down on May 25 in 1961 and completely removed in a row.

Laying

In 1917 the track was laid in the area Viersen. Originally they ran from the spot where today the first parallel to the new line running from Viersen Helena Brunn station freight bypass track Mönchengladbach leaves the path on the direct path between today's Viersener districts Helena Brunn and Heimer through to Viersen BME station. At the level of districts Helena Brunn and Heimer was located at the time the breakpoint Helena Brunn. Since moving the route runs in an arc to the north, where it meets initially to by the Rhenish Railway Company ( RhE ) built railway line Neuss- Viersen and finally reaches the also opened by the RhE today Viersener station.

The BME station was no longer used and degraded after installation. As a replacement for the breakpoint Helena Brunn was built on the new line at the level of Neuwerker road at the present city limits of Mönchengladbach Train Station Viersen Helena Brunn (as Helena Brunn opened ) immediately. This is now but closer in the district Heimer and relatively far away from Helena Brunn. On the former route now runs the L 116 ( Cologne Street / Freedom Road ).

Current situation

Although the first section of Homberg to Hohenbudberg no longer exists, as is the greater part of the route today, however, is still in operation. He is with the western part of the railway line Osterath - Dortmund Süd the former Rhenish Railway Company and its branch line to Duisburg ( RhE ) railway station - now part of the Duisburg Central Station - grown into a regionally very significant way.

The main route from Duisburg Hbf via Duisburg- High Field South and Hohenbudberg (from here on the historical route ) to Mönchengladbach Hbf is today through double track and electrified.

Urgently needed, but not carried out modernization measures prevent far more intensive use of the track, so go between Duisburg Central and Rheinhausen just four trains an hour, of which a direction Moers and Xanten, Niederrhein see route.

Furthermore, cross the trains of this route which links the Lower Rhine route at the same level, the same is true in the Gleisvorfeldern the Krefeld main station for the trains of the railway line Dusseldorf Monchengladbach in the track leading up to the main railway station in Mönchengladbach.

Train services

Today's main line each hour by the Regional Express Rhein- Hellweg -Express ( RE 11) served that connects Mönchengladbach and the Lower Rhine with the western and central Ruhr to Hamm.

Only marginally slower the Regional Bahn Rhein - Nier -Bahn (RB 33), the hourly is traveling twice the distance, alternating with different train routings to one of Aachen Mönchengladbach to Duisburg, on the other hand of Mönchengladbach Duisburg continue to Wesel.

Tariff

The entire route is in the pay scale of the transport association Rhein-Ruhr ( VRR). For journeys within the VRR comes exclusively tariff for the composite application, for trips across the network boundaries exist connecting tickets (even after Venlo ) and the NRW - tariff.
