E9 European long distance path

European Route E9 or International Atlantic coastal Baltic Sea is one of the eleven long-distance trails that are maintained by the European Ramblers Association ( ERA ). The path has a length of about 5,000 km and has been from Portugal along the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to Estonia. An alternative route is at crossing the English Channel on the south coast available. The long distance footpath is not strengthened in all countries and marked. While the Central European route between Brittany and the Vistula is complete, still missing significant sections on the Iberian Peninsula, on the southern French Atlantic coast and in the Baltic States.

History and development

The E9 starts at the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe at Cabo de São Vicente, crosses the Parque Natural do Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina in its entire length, streaks Lisbon and Porto, following the Caminho Português and crosses at Valença the Spanish border. In Portugal, the expansion of the trail, however, is not complete and the label also only partially available.

In Spain, the E9 is greatly expanded and well signposted only in the Basque Country on the route between Irun and Ribadeo.

In the South of France the exact course of the trail along the coast of the Bay of Biscay is not fixed yet. Only from Vannes the long distance path is established and the route follows the French long-distance hiking trails and the tax collector paths along the Brittany coast to Mont -Saint -Michel.

From Roscoff E9 shares and after crossing the English Channel is between Dover and Plymoth an alternative route along the south coast of England are available. The trail follows here among others the South West Coast Path and the South Downs Way.

The track on the European continent through Normandy to Calais, where the two routes meet again. According to the Belgian border, the long-distance hiking mishap along the 70-km -long Belgian North Sea coast to De Haan and then through Flanders to the Dutch border runs from the seaside resort of De.

In the Netherlands, the long distance footpath is on the 725 km long North Sea coast path ( Nordzee Kustpad - LAW 5) out .. It crosses this Sluis from all Dutch coastal provinces (Zeeland, South and North -Holland, Friesland and Groningen before moving on to Reiderland reached the German border.

The German share of the E9 is maintained by three different migrant associations. For the routing along the East Frisian coast between Dollard and the Weser Wiehengebirgs Association Weser-Ems is responsible. From the east bank of the Weser, the trail leads through the territory of the Hiking Association Northern Germany. It goes beyond Bremerhaven, Bad Bederkesa, Wingst first to port and then wipe on the eastern bank of the Elbe about happiness and Elmshorn city to Hamburg. In the course of the long-distance routes E1 and E6 crossed with silver bream. After Mölln and Ratzeburg E9 reached at Lübeck- Travemünde the Baltic Sea.

The further course of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern supervised the German Hiking Association (LV MVP). Also between Travemünde and Ahlbeck the routing is done largely in right off shore. There are the National Boddenlandscape, Fishland - darss and Wolgast crosses before the Polish border is reached on the island of Usedom.
