EA Digital Illusions CE

Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment AB, short DICE is a Swedish computer game development company based in Stockholm.

History

The company was founded in 1992 by former members of the demoscene group The Silents Ulf Mandorff, Olof Gustafsson, Fredrik and Andreas Axelsson Liliegren. All members came from the small town of Alvesta in Sweden. The demoscene influence is visible in some DICE games. For example, bathes the acronym TSL, which used the group The Silents, in the game Motorhead on banners and signs. The operating instructions of Motorhead, however, according to TSL stands for Transatlantic Speed ​​League, is thus used in the manner of a Backronyms.

Their first game, Pinball Dreams, they developed in 1989 for the Amiga, among other things, as they were at school. Today, they are mainly known through they developed Battlefield series, also based on proprietary game engines.

Since 1998, the company is listed on the stock exchange. The largest shareholder was the publisher Electronic Arts, with over 67 % since January 2005. In October 2006, DICE was bought by Electronic Arts 100% and incorporated into the World Group. Digital Illusions CE was renamed EA Digital Illusions CE.

The DICE team has in 2005 the third part of the Battlefield series, Battlefield 2, the successor of Battlefield Vietnam, completed and sold over 1 million times. With the development of the add -ons Special Forces once again the Canadian studios were commissioned, who have already developed Battlefield Vietnam. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, which is available only for consoles, was released in November 2005. DICE EA was also with the development of the fifth part of the series, Battlefield 2142, commissioned, published in September 2006. The antepenultimate developed title of the Battlefield series Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released in March 2010. After the beginning of 2004 a contract with the game developers Trauma Studios, which were known by the Battlefield 1942 mod Desert Combat, concluded on cooperation in future games, DICE bought in September 2004 Trauma Studios with 9 employees. After only six months, DICE gave in June 2005 announced the closure of the trauma Studios in New York. The employees were offered to continue working in Sweden.

Acquisition by Electronic Arts

Already from a press release of 25 August 2006 indicate that the world's largest publisher of computer games, Electronic Arts, DICE will buy. Since 2 October 2006, the acquisition is completed, and a wholly-owned subsidiary DICE EA studio. In the direct result of the acquisition DICE Canada (Ontario, Canada) was closed and the employees in the previous EA Canada (Toronto, Canada ) laid Studio. Redundancies were contrary to rumors not intended and the Swedish studio was continued.

In June, 2013, simultaneously with the announcement of the acquisition of the Star Wars license, EA founded a branch studio DICE in Los Angeles. It took over doing some employees of the previously closed site EA Danger Close Studios.
