Earl of Effingham
Earl of Effingham is a British hereditary title of nobility, which is supported by a branch of the English noble family Howard. The title has been created twice, once in the Peerage of Great Britain and then in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It is named after the village of Effingham in Surrey.
Ceremonies
The title was in the Peerage of Great Britain for Francis Howard, 7th Baron Howard of Effingham, a Guards officer, first created in 1731. The title became extinct then 1816, when the third Earl died without a male descendant.
The second ceremony took place in 1837 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Kenneth Alexander Howard, 11th Baron Howard of Effingham, a distant cousin of the last Earl of the first ceremony, who had distinguished himself as a soldier in the Napoleonic Wars. This was inherited by this previously its subordinate, but older title of Baron Howard of Effingham.
Subordinate title
Ancestor of all the Earls of both awards was William Howard. He held important offices of state, among other things, he was Lord Admiral and Lord Chancellor. In 1554 he was knighted by Queen Maria I as Baron Howard of Effingham to the peer. This barony, which belongs to the Peerage of England is now run as the subordinate title of the respective Earl. At the same time, the respective heir uses it as a courtesy title.
Another title
The son of William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham, Charles Howard, 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham, was also Lord Admiral. In 1597 he was raised to the Earl of Nottingham. This title also belonged to the Peerage of England. He went out as the third Earl died in 1681 without a male descendant.
