Earl of Moray

The title Earl of Moray (pronounced " Murry " ) has been awarded in the Peerage of Scotland several times. Prior to taking the county in the peerage, there were already several people who ruled over Moray entitled Mormaer.

First -proclaimed title holder was Thomas Randolph. His last descendant was Elizabeth Stewart, 7th Countess of Moray, whose husband was also recognized as Earl. As this 1455 fell in a battle against his sovereign, the title was canceled.

Next track carrier was James Stewart, the son of King James IV. This Earl died without issue, the title became extinct. The next Earl of Moray was then George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly. Gordon lost the royal favor, he was killed in 1462, the title became extinct.

The last award was previously in favor of another James Stewart, the illegitimate son of King James V.; with this ceremony were the title of Lord Abernethy and Strathearn (1562 ), Lord Doune ( 1581) and Lord St Colme ( 1611) connected. In addition, Lord Moray holds the title of Baron Stuart of Castle Stuart in Inverness County; since this title belongs to the peerage of Great Britain, the Earl of Moray to the Peerage Act 1963 had a seat in the House of Lords.

The most famous Earl of Moray was James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray, the husband of Elizabeth Stewart, 2nd Countess of Moray, the Earl from the right of his wife ( jure uxoris ) was because he is the hero of a famous ballad: " The Bonny Earl of Murray " (with " Murray " as a variant of " Moray ").

The family seat is at Doune Doune Lodge, Stirling.
