Earl of Angus

Mormaer of Angus or later English Earl of Angus is an old Scottish title of nobility. He is part of the peerage of Scotland, but is performed only as a subordinate title since 1633.

Mormaer is the medieval Scottish term for a count and thus corresponds to the English Earl. The eponymous Angus was one of the original seven provinces of the kingdom of Scotland.

Until the 1240er years Angus was ruled by Scottish Gaels, then came Province and title by marriage to the Anglo-Norman family Umfraville that both eventually lost in the Scottish Wars of Independence. From 1329 to 1389 the house of Stewart presented ( Stuart ) the Earl of Angus, then the illegitimate " red line " of the house Douglas.

1633 the 11th Earl to Marquess of Douglas was raised, Earl of Angus became one subordinate title, which could be done as a courtesy title by the oldest son. The third Marquess was finally appointed in 1703 to the Duke of Douglas, but died childless. During the Duke - titles already went out again, came the Marquess and Earl title in 1761 at the 7th Duke of Hamilton out of the house Douglas - Hamilton. The two titles are to this day among many others in this family, but in fact no longer used.
