Earl of Buchan

The Earl of Buchan Mormaer or was originally the ruler of the medieval Scottish province of Buchan. Buchan was the Mormaerdom in High Medieval Kingdom of Scotland, which came into the hands of a nichtschottischen family.

The title was awarded a total of three times, the passing of the title on female heirs with counting. The title is now held by the family of Erskine, the current title holder is Malcolm Harry Erskine, 17th Earl of Buchan ( b. 1930 ).

The first person who is known as Earl ( Mormaer ) of Buchan, is Gartnait that is mentioned in the Gaelic records of the Book of Deer. This book is an essential source for Mormaershaft of Buchan, Buchan makes its existence to one of the best documented Scottish provinces. After the death of Fergus, † before 1214 Buchan passed into the possession of the Comyn family, and thus became the first Mormaerdom in the hands of a foreign family, even if only the marriage. Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan and inherited the titles of his mother, the line was continued until they perished in the Scottish Wars of Independence. The title remained in the hands of the Crown until it in 1374 to Alexander Stewart, the "Wolf of Badenoch " was awarded. It Buchan was so much reduced that it no longer fell to the rank of a province.

The third award of the title took place in 1469, and the descendants of the former first Earls hold him still. 1617 was the earldom of James Erskine († 1640), a son of John Erskine, 2nd or 7th Earl of Mar, his wife Mary him by her father, James Douglas ( † 1601) had inherited. Since then, the title is passed on within the family Erskine.

The family seat is Newnham House in Hook ( North Hampshire). The Earl holds the subordinate title of Lord Auchterhouse (since 1469 ), Lord Cardross (1610 ) and Baron Erskine of Restormel Castle ( 1806). The first two belong to the peerage of Scotland, the third in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The Earls of Buchan had because of this third title in the Peerage Act 1963 to a seat in the House of Lords.
