Earl of Ross

The Mormaer or Earl of Ross refers to the lord of a medieval Gaelic lordship in northern Scotland, lying approximately between the rivers Oykel and Beauly. The first owner of the Count's Office in Ross was Máel Coluim mac the rebel AEDA. However, the actual founder of the county was Ferchar mac tSagairt in which the title in 1220s by two related destruction of rebel groups, the " MacHeths " and " Meic Uilleim ". He and his son and successor Uilleam I. extended the county from immensely, because they took the king of Norway territory. The family died in 1372 with Uilleam III. and his daughter from Euphemia, who was married to Walter Lesley. The role of the chief of Clan Ross and the title of Earl of Ross remained with the descendants of Walter Leslie and Euphemia until the death of Alexander Leslie, Earl of Ross in 1402, and was now of the MacDonald, Lord of the Isles, and later from the house Stuart accepted. The position of the chief of Clan Ross now went to descendants of Aodh, Earl of Ross ( † 1334 ).

The title remained with the crown until January 23, 1481, when James Stewart, the second son of King James III. Earl of Ross ( and the same for Lord Ardmannoch and Lord Brechin and Navar ) was appointed. In 1488 he was raised to the Duke of Ross. The next ceremony took place on May 20, 1565 in favor of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, who was later appointed on 20 July of the same year the Duke of Albany. After his assassination in 1567 was succeeded by his son James, who a few months later when James VI. the Scottish throne, causing the title was reunited with the crown. When Charles Stuart was appointed on January 23, 1600 to the Duke of Albany, hence the title Marquess of Ormonde, Earl of Ross and Lord Ardmannoch were connected. 1625 Charles King and was the title again fell to the Crown.

1834 presented the publicist Peter Brown ( see below ) found that the extinct title of Earl of Ross in 1778 by Ross Munro of Pitcalnie as a descendant of Hugh Ross of Rarichus was in the male line, the brother of the last Earl, claimed.
