Earl of Mount Edgcumbe

Earl of Mount Edgcumbe is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Great Britain, which is supported by the Edgcumbe family.

Family Edgcumbe

The Edgcumbes came from the gentry of Cornwall, where she since the 13th century in Tavistock has Sindt. 1352 married William Edgcumbe Hilaria de Cotehele who inherited her brother Ralph de Cotehele. This Cotehele House became the family seat of the Edgcumbes. Sir Richard Edgcumbe was a partisan of Henry VII and fought with him at the Battle of Bosworth. After the battle he was defeated by the king knighted and received from him large landholdings and silver mines in Devon and Cornwall. His son Piers Edgcumbe (1472-1539) acquired in 1493 by his marriage with Joan Durnford the lands of Valletorts, which included the southeastern part of the Rame Peninsula and East Stonehouse. From 1547 to 1553 built piers son Richard Edgcumbe ( 1499-1562 ) there Mount Edgcumbe House, which became the new seat of the family. By further political and royal offices the family could increase their importance. Richard Edgcumbe 1742 is collected at the Baron, his son Richard Edgcumbe ( 1716-1761 ) as 2nd Baron a patron and friend of Joshua Reynolds. His brother George Edgecumbe served as an officer in the Royal Navy until 1761 he took up the legacy. In 1781 he was given the newly created title Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletort 1789 he was awarded the newly created title Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. The direct line of Edgcumbes died in 1944 with the 5th Earl of. Kenelm Edgcumbe, a great-grandson of the 2nd Earl had passed as 6th Earl because of the inheritance tax in 1947 Cotehele House to the National Trust. The 1941 bombed- family residence Mount Edgcumbe House he had set up from 1958 to 1964 again. Since Kenelms only son had been killed at Dunkirk in 1940, inherited in 1965 living in New Zealand cousin Edward Piers Edgcumbe House and titles. He sold as 7th Earl the house and the park to the city of Plymouth and Cornwall.

The title was the first time in 1789 to George Edgcumbe, 1st Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletort awarded.
