The Carpathians (Slovak Poloniny, Polish Beskid Lesiste, Ukrainian Лісисті Карпати ' Lisysti Karpaty ') are a northern part of the Eastern Carpathians.

Characteristics

Today's geography mainly uses the first of the above definitions.

The Carpathians in meaning 1) begin in eastern Slovakia near the town of Bardejov (see Western Carpathians ), and are mostly in the Ukraine. A small area also belongs to Romania, because the Carpathians end on Prisloppass ( 1416 meters) on the eastern border of the Maramures region between the Munţii Maramuresului and the Rodnaer mountains in Romania. The highest elevation is the Howerla ( Goverla, 2060 meters) in the Ukraine.

The name of the mountain points to the part still original and unused forests of the region, which are characterized in deeper areas rather of spruce and beech, and in the higher elevations of firs and larches.

In the forest Carpathian spring some major rivers of the region, so among other things Tisza and Prut. The Carpathians also include the so -called polo Ninen.

Conservation

In the Carpathians are several thousand acres of the largest forest areas in Central Europe. They have long been secured in part as nature reserves. In July 2007, UNESCO added large parts of the original beech forests in Slovakia and Ukraine to the World Heritage. The ten areas include all or part of
