École pratique des hautes études

The École pratique des hautes études ( EPHE ) is an institution for advanced studies in Paris, but no university in the traditional sense.

The EPHE was founded on July 31, 1868 by a decree of the French Minister of Culture Victor Duruy and is one of the grandes écoles. Idea was to prepare the students by participating in the practice of research for research. There were neither asked for nor diplomas awarded.

Today the students ( étudiants ) can acquire diplomas, however, a study as auditeur (handset ) is still at a sufficient level of knowledge after consultation.

In 1886, the fifth section of « sciences religieuses " was founded. This was a politically controversial decision, since at the same time, the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the Sorbonne was closed. One of the teachers was Sylvain Lévi, in which the young Marcel Mauss learned Sanskrit. Since 1901, Mauss himself taught at the department.

1975 Founded in 1947, its sixth department became independent as the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales.
