Economic sector

  • Primary sector
  • Secondary sector
  • Tertiary sector

In industrial and commercial sectors of the economy are divided in economics. They find their basis in the three- sector hypothesis of economics.

Primary sector ( primary production )

This sector is also called primary production. The primary production generally makes the raw materials for a product. This sector includes, for example, the growing and harvesting of agricultural products, timber harvesting in forestry, fishing, the killing of wild game for hunting, slaughtering of livestock, the use of hydropower. The classification of mining in the primary sector is controversial, although this sector also provides raw unrefined. Distinction can be made between a narrow definition and a broad definition of the primary sector. According to the narrow definition of industry structure only agriculture, forestry and fisheries would be assigned to the primary sector, according to another definition, however, the mining industry. In most developing countries, the proportion of the population working in the primary sector, much higher than in industrialized nations. There are basically an inverse correlation between the share of employment in the primary sector and the development of a state. The primary sector produces the basic or raw materials, which further processes the secondary sector.

Secondary sector (industrial sector)

The secondary sector includes the manufacturing sector of the economy, ie the sector, which is responsible for the processing of raw materials. These include manufacturing, industry, the craft, the power industry, energy and water supply, most of the construction sector. Synonymous with the term of the industrial sector is used. The mining industry is also partly associated with the secondary sector.

Characteristic of the sector is the processing of goods outside the primary sector, making it material-intensive. It is capital intensive the production process through the use of capital goods.

Tertiary sector (services )

The tertiary or services sector includes all services that are provided in separate companies or by the state as well as in other public facilities. Its members include among others the following activities:

  • Trade
  • Transport, logistics
  • Tourism, hotel and catering industry
  • Social Economy
  • Signaling
  • Credit institutions
  • Insurance
  • Apartment Rental
  • Other enterprises or professions, which provide services
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Authorities
  • Households
  • General government, such as state, local, military, church
  • Craft

In the classical tertiary sector there are such services as cleaning, repair or transport services.

Characteristic of the sector, the production is by use of labor, thus the sector is labor intensive.

Due to the economically significant activities certain branches of the tertiary sector are often listed separately. This usually affects the areas of trade, transport and the public sector. Sensibly this classification is particularly important for service-intensive locations: cities such as Frankfurt, London and Paris generate around 90 % of gross value added in the services sector.

Quartärsektor (information sector)

There are different definitions for the quaternary sector (also Quartärsektor or information sector ), usually the economy will only divided into three sectors. Jean Gottmann 1961 defined the activities covered in this sector as activities in the area of the tertiary sector, which make particularly high intellectual standards and require strong sense of responsibility.

  • Consulting: engineers, lawyers, consultants, accountants, medical and education professions.
  • IT services
  • High technology ( high-tech ) such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, etc.
  • Communication technology

Sometimes, the term Quaternary sector alone also subsumes the currently rapidly expanding information services, ie all industries that deal with production, processing and sale of information (data and knowledge). For example, some economists also assume that develop the western service companies to information companies.

Another definition for the quaternary sector services that are provided in the leisure and entertainment, and thus it contributes to the rapidly growing sector particularly bill.

Hans Linde understood by the quaternary sector 1977 services that are not guided by market principles, but are politically regulated ( Government Services ).

Quintärsektor

This term is used for the waste management industry. This sector includes the following areas: waste collection, scrap yards, sewage treatment and recycling facilities that are otherwise assigned according to NACE the secondary sector.

Tourism, leisure, wellness and health are sometimes performed as a Quintärer sector. This group is usually attributed to the service sector ( tertiary sector).
