Edward Franklin "Ed" Ulinski ( born December 7, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, † September 17, 2006 in Chardon, Ohio) was an US- American football player and coach. He played as a guard for the Cleveland Browns in the All-America Football Conference ( AAFC ).

Playing career

College career

Ed Ulinski already played in high school American football. After finishing school, he studied from 1939 to 1941 at Marshall College. He played there on several positions at the Marshall Thundering Herd, but was used mainly as a guard. In 1941 he was elected because of his athletic achievements to the All- American. During the Second World War he served in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1946 as a Captain.

Professional career

In 1944, the AAFC had been founded. The League took in 1946 on the operation of gambling. Ulinski was, like his former teammate at the College Frank Gatski of the Cleveland Browns under contract after he had an offer from the Detroit Lions, who were settled in the competitive League of AAFC of the National Football League ( NFL) knocked out. Coach and general manager of the team from Cleveland was Paul Brown, who Ulinski on offense and on defense his team brought to use.

The Browns were the team in the AAFC and had many future All- Pro players like Mac Speedie, Dante Lavelli and Bill Willis in their ranks. Ulinski was used as a player of the offensive line to protect quarterback Otto Graham and served as a running back Marion Motley of Vorblocker.

Until the dissolution of the League in 1949, the Browns won all four championships. After the regular season in 1946, the New York Yankees were defeated with 14:9 in the AAFC - final. In 1947 team, coached by Ray Flaherty Yankees were defeated in the final again. When 14:3 victory of Brown Graham latched on with the help of his offensive line even a touchdown. The following year Ulinski remained with his team in the regular season undefeated, which brought the re- entry into the championship game with yourself where the Buffalo Bills were defeated with 49:7.

In 1949 the team from Cleveland won the final AAFC championship title. The game against the San Francisco 49ers ended with a 21-7 victory for the Browns.

After the 1949 season, the AAFC had to stop the operation of gambling and Ulinski ended his playing career.

Coaching career

Immediately after his playing career was Ed Ulinski assistant coach at Santa Clara University and Purdue University. After Weeb Ewbank, an assistant to Paul Brown, had to leave the Baltimore Colts after the season 1953, the Browns, Ulinski returned to Cleveland. In 1971 he took over the video section of the Browns, which dealt with the evaluation of game records.

Off the pitch

Ed Ulinski was married and had a son and a daughter. He spent his life in a nursing home and suffered from Alzheimer 's disease.

Honors

In the years 1946 and 1948 Ulinski was voted All- Pro. He is a member of the Marshall University Hall of Fame and in the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame.
