Édouard Thomas Burgues de Missiessy

Édouard Thomas Burgues de Missiessy, actually Édouard -Thomas de Burgues, comte de Missiessy ( born April 23 1756 in Forcalquier, † March 24, 1837 in Toulon) was a French admiral.

Life and work

Burgues came from a noble family loyal to the king. With ten years he volunteered in 1766 volunteered for the Royal Navy.

During the American Revolutionary War, he served under Admiral Charles Henri d' Estaing and was able to repeatedly distinguished by bravery. In 1781 he took over the rank of lieutenant in the ship " Vaisseau " on which he had already sailed in the beginning of his career.

1789, at the beginning of the revolution in his homeland, Burgues commanded a frigate in the Mediterranean. It was early on a partisan of Napoleon. In January 1792, he was promoted to Captain and took over the ship " Centaur " in Admiral Laurent Truguets fleet.

Burgues could also be distinguished by bravery and was promoted to rear-admiral in January 1793. When the revolution was transformed to a reign of terror, Burgues fell on whether his aristocratic origin and Welfare Committee let him arrested. As a partisan of Napoleon, he managed to escape the guillotine. After some time, he was again released and used in his previous rank again.

General Charles Leclerc d' Ostin introduced in 1801 by order of Napoleon an expeditionary army of 25,000 men together to put down the rebellion, led by Toussaint Louverture on Saint Domingue ( Hispaniola ). In addition to Louis Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse and Jean -Baptiste Philibert Willaumez was, inter alia, also to Burgues destined to bring the troops to Haiti. (→ French colonies )

As a partisan of Napoleon Burgues was after the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815) at his offices and retired into private life. He supported neither King Charles X before the July Revolution of 1830, still king Louis -Philippe I. during the July Monarchy.

Four weeks before his 81st birthday died Édouard Thomas Buruges de Missiessy on March 24, 1837 in Toulon and found his final resting place.
