Edward Stanley, 1st Baron Monteagle

Edward Stanley, 1st Baron Monteagle of ( uncertain * 1460, † April 6, 1523 ) was an English nobleman and knight of the Garter.

Edward Stanley was born as the fifth son of Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby in his marriage to his first wife, Eleanor. Edward IV struck him a knight, and he was one of the pallbearers at his funeral.

The rise of his father, Henry VII also benefited the son. In the autumn of 1485 Edward Stanley High Sheriff of Lancashire was. His contribution to this battle is controversial, because he was only responsible for the rearguard, although he is said to have contributed greatly to the English victory. The vernacular attributes to him the killing of the Scottish king. For his contribution to winning the battle, he was appointed on May 8, 1514 Knight of the Order of the Garter.

On November 23, 1514 Edward Stanley was introduced as Baron Monteagle in the House of Lords. In June 1520, he attended the meeting of the English and the French king on the Field of the Cloth of Gold near Calais in part.

Edward Stanley died on April 6, 1523 and was buried in Hornby.

Family

Edward Stanley was married in first marriage with Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Vaughan of Tretower, Brecknockshire. The marriage remained childless. In his second marriage he was married to Anne, daughter of Sir John Harrington. The marriage had two sons named Thomas. The elder of these two sons inherited the title of Baron of Monteagle.
