History

The construction of the port began in the early 1970s on the site of a newly reclaimed polder; in 1973, the plants were opened. The port now consists of four docks: Julianahaven (12-15 m water over chart datum ), Emma Haven ( 8 m), Wilhelminahaven (13-15 m) and in 2008 commissioned by Queen Beatrix in operation - still in expansion - Beatrixhaven (7 -8 m). The Wilhelminahaven has extended the early 2010s. North of the Wilhelminahavens should another dock for an LNG terminal arise, but that should not be built for reasons of profitability.

Economy

Eemshaven only serves to function as a freight and transshipment port for various operations (eg cars Borg, Holland Malt, Orange Blue ) as a port for the equipment built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg on the River Ems cruise ships. Equipment for the recreational boating is not available in Eemshaven.

In the Eemshaven is the wind farm Westereems. The numerous small - dating from the 1990s - Wind turbines at the dikes were the end of the 2000s due to much larger systems - distributed over the entire area - replaced ( " repowering" ).

The electricity supplier Electrabel operates in the east of the Eemshaven since 1977 a gas - and -steam combined cycle power plant, which has been repeatedly modernized and expanded over the years. Today, the power plant has an electrical Eemscentrale total capacity of 2.4 GW.

With more new power plants to be built with a total capacity of 7.5 GW in the coming years an Energy Park. Currently planning Nuon and Advanced Power plants at the site, RWE began in 2009 the construction of a coal-fired power plant with a net capacity of about 1560 MW, which should begin operation in 2013. In summer 2011, this power plant construction permit was revoked due to the feared negative impact on the Wadden Sea and the East Frisian islands first.
