Elephant & Castle tube station

Elephant & Castle is the name of a traffic junction in the London Borough of Southwark, consisting of a station of the railway and London Underground station. It is located at an intersection of five main roads, at the boundary of Travelcard Zone 1 and 2 In the year of 2011 there were 17.72 million subway passengers of the subway system, added 3.111 million passengers by rail.

Plant

At the four-track station stop in two suburban lines, the Thameslink line and the company First Capital Connect Luton to Sutton and the South Eastern line between Blackfriars and Sevenoaks. The station is located on a viaduct and has two inputs on the Elephant Road, and on the upper floor of the shopping center Elephant and Castle. The metro station is served by the Northern Line and Bakerloo Line. There are two station buildings, which are about 100 meters apart. There are no escalators exist, the access to the platforms is done by elevators and narrow spiral stairs.

History

The London, Chatham and Dover Railway opened to the railway station for the time being temporarily on 6 October 1862. In February 1863 she took the plant definitely in operation.

The station of the Northern Line was opened by the predecessor company, the City and South London Railway (C & SLR), on 18 December 1890. She was part of the first electrically powered subway in the world. The opening of the station Bakerloo Line took place on August 5, 1906 by the then Baker Street and Waterloo Railway ( BS & WR). Although the stations of two different companies were built, they were joined by a pedestrian tunnel to each other on August 10, 1906.

In their construction, the C & SLR station of the still existing station Kennington possible. It was partially rebuilt in the 1920s, when it broadened the underlying tunnel in order to increase capacity. In the 1960s, the old building had to give way to the mall. On 12 December 2003 a new modern station building was opened. The station of the BS & WR, however, presents itself with its glazed terracotta tiles almost like in the early years and is a typical example of the work of the architect Leslie Green.
