Elio Sgreccia

Cardinal Elio Sgreccia ( born June 6, 1928 in Arcevia, Marche, Italy ) is a bioethicist, Cardinal and Archbishop Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Curia.

Life

Elio Sgreccia received after his theological training on 29 June 1952, the ordination. He graduated in 1963 a degree in literature and philosophy at the University of Bologna. From 1954 to 1972 he was vice-rector, professor and rector of the diocesan seminary of brands. On November 24, 1972 he was awarded by Pope Paul VI. the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness. From 1972 to 1973 he was Vicar General of the Diocese of Fossombrone. From 1974 to 1984 he was chaplain at the Medical Faculty of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore ( UCSC ) in Rome, from 1984 he was responsible for the teaching of bioethics.

In 1990 he became a professor of bioethics at UCSC from 1992 to 2000 Director of the Institute for Bioethics. From 1985 to 2006 he was also director of the Center for Bioethics at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. From 1998 to 2005 director of the Centre for International Cooperation.

From 1990 to 2006 he was a member of the Italian National Committee for Bioethics. He was appointed to the State Commission for the establishment of guidelines for biomedical and genetics in 2001. Since 2003 he has been President of the International Federation of person - oriented bioethical Institute ( FIBIP ), based in Rome. Since 2004 he has been Chairman of the Ut Vitam Habeant Foundation. Since 2004 he has been president of Donum vitae in the diocese of Rome.

Episcopate

He was appointed by John Paul II as Titular Bishop of Zama Minor and appointed Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family in 1992. The episcopal ordination was granted on January 6, 1993 by Pope John Paul II himself; Co-consecrators were the Curia archbishops and cardinals later Giovanni Battista Re and Justin Francis Rigali. The Office of the Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family he held until 1996. He was appointed President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, 2005. 2008 was his age-related resignation by Pope Benedict XVI. granted.

In solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Sant'Angelo in Pescheria in the College of Cardinals. Because of the age limit cardinal took Sgreccia not participate in the conclave of 2013.
