Émerson Leão

Émerson Leão ( born July 11, 1949 in Ribeirão Preto ) is a former Brazilian football player and current football coach.

Playing career

Association

The football goalkeeper Émerson Leão, named Leão, one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the 1970s. In the club he started his professional career in 1968 with Palmeiras. Here he played until 1978 and returned in 1984 go back there. In the intervening years he played for Vasco da Gama, Gremio and Corinthians. His football career he ended 1986 at Sport Recife.

National

His first try at the senior team he had at age 21 on March 8, 1970 gained a 2-1 friendly against Argentina. At the World Cup in Mexico in 1970, he participated as a substitute goalkeeper of the Brazilian national football team, where he celebrated the world title with Brazil. With the Football World Cup 1974 in Germany, he was already a regular goalkeeper, and reached the fourth place. The match for third place went to Poland with 0:1 lost. The only goal of the Poles against Leão scored the top scorer of this World Cup Grzegorz Lato. Four years later, Leão in Argentina was at the Football World Cup 1978 captain of the Brazilian team and was third in the World Cup with Brazil. In 1986 he was again nominated as a reserve goalkeeper for the Football World Cup 1986 in Mexico. He completed a total of 80 A- internationals.

Coaching career

1987 Émerson Leão was set at Sport Recife as a coach, where he immediately won the Brazilian Championship in the same year, although the titling very controversial vonstatten went into this season. In 1988 he left Sport Recife in the direction of Coritiba FC to its successful national and international coaching career resume.

As a coach, he was in charge in 2000/ 01 for four months, the Brazilian national team. Other stations have included Santos, Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte, Sao Paulo and Atlético Mineiro. Recently (August 2013) he worked as a coach in 2012 during the ascent candidates AD São Caetano in the Série B, the second Brazilian league.
