Émile Boeswillwald

Émile Boeswillwald ( born February 2, 1815 in Strasbourg, † March 20, 1896 ) was a French architect and conservationist.

Boeswillwald resigned after completing his studies in Munich in the architectural firm of Henri Labrouste in Paris. Since 1840 he was a member of the Commission of Monuments historiques, the Inspector General, he was the successor of Prosper Mérimée 1860. He has worked together with Eugène Viollet -le- Duc.

Boeswillwald led in 1888 by the enlargement of the castle of Pontchartrain in Jouars -Pontchartrain. For many years he worked on the restoration of the Abbey Church of Notre -Dame in Mouzon. In 1874, he renewed the damaged in the German -French war cathedral of Toul. He also led the restoration of the Abbey of Saint -Germer -de-Fly, the church of Saint- Étienne in Vignory, the Cathedral of Laon, the Abbey of La Trinité in Vendôme, the Cathedral of Bayonne, from Notre- Dame d' Avioth and the Sainte by -Chapelle in Paris. Further works are from the enlargement of the church of Notre -Dame -en- Assomption in Bourbonne -les- Bains ( 1875), the restoration of the Basilica of Saint -Jean -Baptiste in Chaumont ( 1847-1854 ), the church of Notre -Dame in Isômes ( 1849) and work on the church Saint -Urbain in Troyes ( 1846-1848 ).

In Alsace restored Boeswillwald the former abbey church of Murbach (1862-1870), designed the Rhombenhelm and the gable of the crossing tower of the former abbey church in Neuwiller- lès -Saverne, presented the Collegiate Church of Niederhaslach ago (1853 ) and restored the St. Nicholas Chapel in Niedermünster on Mount Sainte-Odile ( 1847-1850 ).

With René Cagnat and Albert Ballu, he published in 1895 the work of Timgad, une cité africaine sous l' Empire romain.

Boeswillwalds son Paul was also an architect, and his grandson Émile Arthur was a painter.
