Emomalii Rahmon

Emomali Rahmon ( Tajik Эмомалии Раҳмон; Russian Эмомали Рахмон; امامعلی رحمان ( in Arabic script ), born October 5, 1952 in Danghara, Kulob province as Emomali Rahmonov ) is since 1994 President of Tajikistan.

Life

After studying economics, he served as party secretary in a farm. With the help of the President Rahmon Nabijew ( Раҳмон Набиев ) he later rose to the director of a state farm in his native region. On November 20, 1992, he was elected by Parliament as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the newly independent state of Tajikistan and finally and on 6 November 1994 on the president. The opposition and international observers criticized the elections due to irregularities. On 6 November 1999, he was elected for a further, now seven-year, term as President. On November 5, 2006 Rahmon won re- election against six other opposition candidates. On 26 March 2007 changed Emomalij Scharifowitsch Rakhmon, as he was known to date, his name in Emomali Rahmon. This was, according to Rahmon, part of the new identity of Tajikistan.

Religion and Politics

Rahmon is a Sunni Muslim and has completed his pilgrimage to Mecca in March 1997. He is committed to close relations between the Islamic countries in the region, particularly to Iran and Afghanistan.

The international community has repeatedly denounced the Rahmon government for violations of human rights and freedom of the press

At the meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in 2010 in Dushanbe, Rahmon himself spoke out against the " abuse " of Islam for political purposes. "Terrorism and terrorists have no nation, no country and no religion. " Rahmon added: " By using the term ' Islamic terrorism ' only Islam is discredited, it debases the pure and peaceful religion of Islam. "

For fear of growing Islamism Rahmon signed in early August 2011, a law that prohibits people under the age of 18 attending mosques in Muslim Tajikistan. Parents threaten long prison sentences if their children attend religious ceremonies. The only exceptions are funerals.
