Enipeus (mythology)

Enipeus (Greek Ἐνιπεύς ) is a river god in Greek mythology, a son of Oceanus and Tethys and the secret love of Tyro.

Tyro was indeed married to King Cretheus of Iolcus, with whom she had their sons Aeson, Pheres and Amythaon. However, she loved Enipeus. She tried to seduce him; However Enipeus resisted their advances. One day approached her Poseidon, which in turn was aflame with passion for Tyro, in the form of Enipeus and performed with the deluded Tyro that which Enipeus of decency out was not able. From this connection came the twins Neleus and Pelias.

The eponymous river Enipeus is in Thessaly, where he was to become the key factor of the Battle of Pharsalus.
