Enrique Reig y Casanova

Cardinal Enrique Reig y Casanova ( born January 20, 1858 in Valencia, Spain, † August 20 1927 in Toledo) was Archbishop of Valencia and Toledo.

Life

Enrique Reig y Casanova received after a study of Catholic theology at the seminary of Valencia in 1886, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked as a pastor in the Diocese of Almeria, taught at the local seminary and held temporarily the office of vicar general.

In 1901 he received the appointment as Archdeacon, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Toledo and Kathedralkanonikus. In 1903 he was appointed apostolic prothonotary, a year later he was auditor at the Ecclesiastical Court of Madrid and President of the University.

On 28 May 1914 he was appointed bishop of Barcelona. The episcopal ordination he received on November 8, 1914 by the Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and later cardinal, Francesco Ragonesi. In 1920 he became archbishop of Valencia, two years later Archbishop of Toledo. Pope Pius XI. took him on 11 December 1922 as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio on the College of Cardinals. Enrique Reig y Casanova died on August 20, 1927 and was buried in the Cathedral of Toledo.
